Gundam. That’s right, all of my loots this month is related to Gundams. Well, perhaps plastic models in general since I did buy a huge box of paints and modeling supplies. As for actual collectible merchandise though, Gundams.
All of my new gunpla for this month:
- 1/100 ガンダムキュリオス 1/100 Gundam Kyrios
- HG フルアーマー・ユニコーンガンダム（ユニコーンモード） HG Full Armor Unicorn Gundam [Unicorn Mode]
- HG ユニコーンガンダム（デストロイモード）＋1/48 ヘッドディスプレイベース HG Unicorn Gundam [Destroy Mode] + 1/48 Head Display Base
Starting with the 1/100 (non-grade) Gundam Kyrios, I have been searching for this kit for quite a long time, a couple years in fact. In both of the times I have been in Japan, I couldn’t find the 1/100 Kyrios on any store shelves. While it was available online, the prices turned me away. I couldn’t find one for a reasonable price until just last month when a friend helped me look. I purchased my 1/100 Virtue in July of 2011, so it really has taken me quite a while to complete the 4 Gundams from 00 1st season.
The body was particularly interesting to build, and the legs were neat too. However, this is a slightly older kit. The design of the parts and the way they are put together does show their age and era. The 1/100 non-grade line was discontinued after Gundam 00 after all. With that said, it is a decent kit since Gundam 00 was the tipping point of when non-Master Grades started to become quite good. The articulation design is just a little under today’s standards. What I like most is probably all the extra mechanical details over the High Grade counterpart.
Last month, I received the HG Star Build Strike Gundam to start off the HG Build Fighters line. Now this month, I feel that it is the perfect timing to start off my HG Unicorn line. I want to note that I am specific about the Unicorn series and not HGUC in general. I am a fan of Gundam Unicorn, but can’t say the same about other series in the UC timeline. So if a kit has variants, I want the one that showed up in Gundam Unicorn. Anyways, I knew that I wanted the Unicorn Gundam as the first kit, but the regular HG Unicorn Gundam in Unicorn mode is quite plain, so I went for the Full Armor version.
But! The Destroy mode is also an important aspect of the Unicorn Gundam. Luckily, I spotted this version that comes with a head display base while shopping for paints. I wanted the red psycho-frame because that is the default and iconic color, so this was perfect. I do plan to get the Full Armor Destroy Mode with the green psycho-frame someday, but not until I build up a sizable HG Unicorn line. I want my collection to grow in order, so the same applies for the Banshee variants.
The head display base is pretty cool. It can transform between the two modes and even has an articulated neck. Although the stand behind it is not as flexible as the newer action bases, it is still adjustable and also removable. Maybe I can use this base as practice and experimentation to test exactly how I want to go about painting the HGs.
So that’s it for my Gundam loots this month! So many kits to build now, and that’s just the Gundams. I still have my Valvraves and Zoids to paint as well. Gahhh!
