「迷路の中で小さな一歩」 – Struggles in Japan 2 – November 2016

While November was not a short month, I can’t believe that it is already the end of 2016. Soon another year will pass, and yet, I have not moved very much towards my dreams and aspirations. Coming to Japan was a small step. This month, I made just another small step forward. However, I am in a maze. I think I know where I want to end up, but have no idea how to get there. I am in Japan, surviving, trying to settle down comfortably, searching for opportunities to leap forward. My situation isn’t the best, but it is also not the worst. The chances are here. I can work with this.

For the first weekend of this month, on Saturday the 5th, I went over to Kanamachi in Tokyo to hang out with Xyrenth. For lunch, we ate at Mos Burger. During my first time there, I had the モスバーガーof the same name as the restaurant and it was delicious. This time, I tried their 野菜バーガー, which was also great. Afterwards, we went to karaoke at JoySound for an hour. Oddly, we didn’t get an option to extend the time. Without other things to do, I went with Xyrenth to her apartment for the main purpose of this visit, to checked her in-progress HG Schwalbe Graze. Upon Xyrenth’s request, I repaired the blade tips of the wire claw, and painted some parts in gold. Before returning back to Chiba, Xyrenth treated me to a standing ramen shop for dinner. I enjoyed the food and experience, but I can imagine different if hot and crowded.

The next day, it was finally time for me to start on building the brand new HG Barbatos Lupus. I have been looking forward to it but endured the wait until I watched some episodes of season 2 first. After a bit, I also started on the HG Schwalbe Graze I purchased late last month.

After the less than satisfactory karaoke session a few days ago, I searched around online for karaoke shops that are reasonable and not complicated in pricing. After deciding on a couple candidates, I invited Xyrenth over to Chiba on the 8th. Before heading straight to karaoke, we first had lunch nearby the station at 天丼てんや. It was our first time to that restaurant and both of us were impressed by the food. After satisfying our stomachs, I lead the way to カラオケBanBan. The pricing was as written on their website, so we decided on this place. We took turns singing for a total of 3 hours, by the end of which, my throat was all dry and tired. Now, I am quite terrible at singing, but out of all that horrifying noise, the best ones I sang were 永遠語り~光ノ歌~ and 君の知らない物語, in my opinion. It was a very fun day. Before parting ways to return home, Xyrenth treated me to 吉野家 where I ordered a 半熟卵豚丼.

On Saturday the 12th, I contacted Xyrenth on an urgent basis to go to Gundam Cafe together for me to, literally, get a taste of the remaining food I wanted to try on the Tekkadan 1st-half menu. That limited menu will change to the Tekkadan 2nd-half menu the upcoming Wednesday and I had no other time free besides that Saturday evening. The portions were small as usual, but I ordered enough to actually get full. At the Gundam Cafe, there was another person eating who had a number of HG models out on the table. Mostly Zeon mobile suits but also a Barbatos Lupus along with a Build Burning.

The weekend of the 19th & 20th was the first couple days of the Gunpla Expo Winter 2016 held in Akihabara UDX. The first day of the expo didn’t start until 17:00, so I took the extra time in the afternoon to help Xyrenth catch up with the latest episodes of Tekketsu no Orphans season 2, which I had already watched by myself ahead of time. Then, we headed off to the expo, which was fantastic. The expo itself will be talked about in detail in its own page. Same about the following day, when the Gunpla Expo’s limited item store opened to the public. At the end of Sunday, upon returning back to Xyrenth’s apartment, I built a bit of my own HG Schwalbe Graze while introducing Xyrenth to Kamen Rider by having her watch a couple episodes of Gaim and an episode of Ex-Aid. Then the rest of the night were spent opening the 30 packs in a Vanguard booster box Xyrenth bought earlier.

On the 22nd was my Japanese language school’s field trip to the Chiba Port Tower. Early that morning, before I even wake up, there was an earthquake that lasted longer than usual. Nevertheless, I didn’t mind it and continued sleeping. The event of going to the Chiba Port Tower will have its own page. However, I wasn’t exactly very motivated and the photos I took were alright at best. The other day in Akihabara for the Gunpla Expo, I purchased the HG Gundam Gushion Rebake Full City. Not wanting my collection of the 2nd season models to be bigger than the 1st season, I took the opportunity of being at central Chiba to drop by Yodobashi Camera and purchased the Teiwaz mobile suits, Hyakuri and Hyakuren.

The 23rd was a holiday. I didn’t have any particular plans, but Xyrenth invited me over to hang out. Due to time constraints, I went over to her place the night prior and, to my surprise, when I arrived, she was watching episode 33 of Kamen Rider Gaim. She was just at episode 3 a couple days ago… Anyways, we chatted a bit about Gaim. Then, under my suggestion, we re-split the holo cards from the Vanguard booster box from the other day. The reason being that Xyrenth did not seem 100% satisfied last time. This time, I simply gave her all of the holos and had her pass me the ones she doesn’t care about. The next day, I showed Xyrenth a couple episodes of Stella no Mahou, played a match of Vanguard with her decks while watching Yugioh 5D’s, and helped painting some model kit parts in silver. I also posed some of Xyrenth’s finished models since she doesn’t change them. While eating ice cream and drinking CC Lemon, I reminisced about my time in Kyoto.

November 24th was a very special day. Winter came early. It snowed.
This was not my first time seeing or touching snow, but it was my first time seeing snow fall from the sky. It was beautiful beyond words. With my camera, I snapped as many photos as I could on my way to school. On top of it being beautiful and my first time seeing snow fall, it was also an exceeding rare phenomenon. It is not exactly common for it to snow here in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and even rarer for it to snow during November. The last time being 50 years ago, or so I was told.

On the 29th, I went over to Akihabara with Xyrenth to buy Christmas presents for fellow friends across the Pacific Ocean. First, we ate at Gundam Cafe, where the limited menu has changed to the Tekkadan 2nd-half menu. The decoration and displays in the cafe also changed a bit. After eating, we went around various stores looking for gifts. At Mandarake, Xyrenth bought herself a Melon Lock Seed, and apparently, had already finished all episodes of Kamen Rider Gaim… Anyways, in the end, I think we had a good selection of presents. To be honest, I really wanted to give more, but unfortunately am unable to do so this year.

So in my own free time by myself relaxing at home, I played a bit of Senran Kagura on the 11th. Finally, getting to the 2nd chapter that I never got to playing for years. On the 12th and the 21st, I played Gundam Breaker 2 with my little brother. Not at all often, I know. I have most of Powered GM Cardigan’s parts, missing just the arms. Destiny’s backpack also dropped for me, but it will be a while until I can equip such a high level part. Currently, I am using either a full Stark Jegan or an almost full Powered GM Cardigan as my main units. On the 25th, I spent my time watching Kurod’s broadcasts on NicoNico, and prior to sleeping, started reading the first volume of Nisekoi that I bought last month. On the weekend of the 26th & 27th, my friend GameMaster was on to chat while I finished up my Schwalbe Graze and resumed on the Barbatos Lupus. Unfortunately, I had stopped playing PSO2 due to not only time constraints, but also because the game’s data size has finally exceed my memory card. And without the cash to buy a PS4 or a bigger PSV memory card, I have no other choice. On the 30th, I built a bit of Barbatos Lupus while watching TV, and later some read manga.

The anime I watched this month:

  • 鉄血のオルフェンズ2nd (ep.3-7)
  • ステラのまほう (ep.3)
  • ろんぐらいだぁず (ep.2-3)

The manga I read:

  • ニセコイ (started)
  • 揉み払い師 (vol.1)
  • 源君物語 (vol.5)

Built these models:

  • [HG] バルバトスルプス
  • [HG] シュヴァルベグレイズ

And played the following games:

  • -PSV- ガンダムブレイカー2
  • -PSV- 戦乱カグラ -Shinovi Versus-

Hey Flawless, good to still see you blogging!

Just wanted to say Happy New Year!

I was actually in Tokyo on the day of Gunpla Expo! Maybe we walked past each other without knowing that day. I didn’t get to attend it though since I had to leave for Nagoya that late afternoon. Did you see Syd from Gaijin Gunpla though?

I am in the same boat as you in life though. Know where I want to be but still figuring out how to. Going to Japan was one step. Hope we both make it at the end.

I’m rather envious that you are able to enjoy yourself in Japan though :)

Oh my…. it is amazing to see you again. Happy new year.

I never stopped blogging, but I rarely upload hobby related posts nowadays. It is already a handful to keep up with life.

I am hanging onto my hobbies only by a thread, and currently, adding a bit of fun into my daily life is about as far as I could do. Ideally, I want to be able to be devoted to my hobbies.

So… are you still in Japan? What are you up to now in terms of life?

I’d say that if time permits, then allow yourself to do something that you enjoy. Be it this hobby or other. Chances are… If you don’t do it “now”, you probably won’t have time to do later. Even if you can’t enjoy it to the fullest, you can take it easy. And like you said, adding a bit of fun into your daily life when other aspects are looking gloomy.

In my quest to build my career and do something with my life, I discarded my hobbies since they don’t contribute to career skills, I find them waste of valuable time. That was probably a mistake. I’ve talked about this in detail in one of my earlier post this year: Gunpla Chat 01: Expo City, Osaka. This is how I’ll talk about the other parts of the missing four years as well later on. Always good to spend a little time for your own enjoyment.

Although I am not in Japan anymore, I supposed I am in a better position than before. Still focusing on building career skills while moving up the corporate ladder and taking on leadership responsibilities. Such opportunities make for valuable experience and skills that are versatile no matter where you go.

Regarding life in general, the question I ask myself now is “at the end, what do I have to show for it?” and this is why I do what I do.

        Sorry for dropping a wall of text on you ^^;
