Happy Chinese New Year?
February 8, 2016

I am told by my parents that today, February 8th, is Chinese New Year. However, I don’t feel anything. The Chinese New Year is determined by the lunisolar calendar and so the date of Chinese New Year changes every year. I don’t know how to use or read a Chinese calendar and thus I can’t determine when Chinese New Year is without somebody telling me. Even when I am told that today is Chinese New Year, I can’t believe it. Today is the start of a new year, a new beginning… no. 2016 started a month ago on January 1st.
When a new year starts is arbitrary. At what point in planet Earth’s orbit around the Sun do we consider the beginning and the end? The lunisolar calendar even takes the phases of the Moon into account. There is no right or wrong, just different. In my case, the system that I pay attention to is the Georgian calendar. So for me, new years already passed. I can’t feel the desire for celebration and the excitement of a new beginning. To be brutally honest, I don’t identify with this culture.
Happy New Years for those who will be celebrating. As for me, today is the day I awkwardly accept money from people.
